About Methanol
A low-boiling polar solvent widely used as an HPLC mobile phase and as a feedstock for biodiesel. It is acutely toxic because alcohol dehydrogenase oxidises it to formaldehyde and formic acid, which attack the optic nerve — a few tens of millilitres can cause permanent blindness.
