About Chloroform
Once the anaesthetic of choice, chloroform is now a laboratory extraction solvent and a reagent in the classic chloroform–methanol lipid extraction. It is denser than water and light-sensitive; slow oxidation in air and light generates phosgene and hydrogen chloride, so it is stored with a stabiliser.
