How the scientific writing checker works

Scientific writing has its own register. Passive constructions are correct when the method matters more than the person performing it; hedging is appropriate when the evidence genuinely is uncertain and damaging when it is not; nominalisations such as "the determination of" blur an action that a verb would state directly. Generic grammar checkers miss all three, because none of them are grammatical errors. This checker targets register instead: passive-voice constructions, hedging and overclaiming language, wordy phrases with a shorter equivalent, nominalisations, sentences that have grown too long to follow, tense shifts between paragraphs, and a Flesch reading-ease score for the whole passage.

The local pass runs entirely in your browser, in about the time it takes to click the button. Nothing you paste is transmitted, stored, or logged, and it works whether or not the optional AI features are enabled. It is deliberately rule-based rather than model-based, so the same input always produces the same findings and you can see exactly why a phrase was flagged. Treat the findings as review prompts rather than verdicts: a flagged passive sentence may be exactly the right choice for your methods section.

Two optional AI modes go further when you want them. The grammar and register mode returns a structured list of issues with the offending text and a concrete suggestion, and the clarity rewrite mode returns a fully rewritten paragraph that preserves your facts, numbers, and terminology. Both are opt-in: the first request shows a consent line explaining that your text is sent to our AI provider, that the provider is routed to zero-retention endpoints, and that we never store or log it. If AI is switched off, has reached its daily limit, is slow, or fails, the tool falls back to the local report with a clear explanation instead of an error.
