About L-Valine
A branched-chain amino acid whose hydrophobic side chain packs into protein interiors. Because humans cannot synthesise it, it is an essential nutrient; a genetic defect in its catabolism causes maple syrup urine disease, named for the sweet odour of the accumulating metabolite.
