About D-Mannitol
A sugar alcohol that is not absorbed from the gut, so it acts as an osmotic laxative and diuretic. Intravenous mannitol shrinks brain oedema by pulling water out of tissue, and it hardens into the brittle crystalline phase used in freeze-drying.
