About 2-Deoxy-D-ribose
The sugar that gives DNA its name: it is ribose with the 2-hydroxyl replaced by hydrogen. Removing that group prevents the neighbouring attack that cleaves RNA under alkaline conditions, trading reactivity for the genomic stability of DNA.
